Sergeant Major Alvarez was born and raised in Grand Prairie, Texas. He graduated high school and enlisted in the Marine Corps in October 2004. Upon completing all training, he received orders to CLB-1 and deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in September 2005.
Upon return, Lance Corporal Alvarez was reassigned to CLB-1 and deployed to Iraq for the second time in August 2006. He was promoted to Corporal in October 2006 and Sergeant in October 2007. In February 2008, he deployed to Iraq for the third time and remained with CLB-1 until he received orders to Marine Security Guard (MSG) duty in 2009.
From 2009 to 2012, Sergeant Alvarez was stationed in Brasilia, Brazil; Manila, Philippines; and Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, and served as an Assistant Detachment Commander. In January 2012, he was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant. In January 2013, Staff Sergeant Alvarez received orders to CLB-6 and deployed to Afghanistan in July 2013 to support Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) before returning in February 2014. Upon return, he was re-deployed to Afghanistan in support of OEF 14-2 in March 2014.
In July 2015, Staff Sergeant Alvarez deployed with the Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force-Crisis Response-Africa to MK Air Base, Romania, and Novo Selo Training Area, Bulgaria, supporting the Black Sea Rotational Force.
In July 2017, Staff Sergeant Alvarez was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant and remained with CLB-6 until he received orders to MSG school for Detachment Commander training in December 2017. Upon graduating, he was assigned to Khartoum, Sudan, for his first post as a Detachment Commander and Havana, Cuba, for his second post.
In February 2021, Gunnery Sergeant Alvarez was promoted to First Sergeant and received orders to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines in March 2021, where he served as the Company First Sergeant for India Company and deployed to Australia for Marine Rotational Force--Darwin. After returning, he was reassigned to Weapons Company and received orders to the Communication Training Battalion in October 2023 as a senior enlisted advisor.
In September 2024, First Sergeant Alvarez was promoted to Sergeant Major and reported to Recruiting Station Tampa, 6th Marine Corps District in December 2024, where he currently serves as the Recruiting Station Sergeant Major. Sergeant Major Alvarez's decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 2 Gold Stars and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with 1 Gold Star.
