Maj. Marcus Gillett Commanding Officer, RS Fort Lauderdale

Major Gillett was born in 1983 at Lakenheath Air Force Base, England. He was commissioned in the Marine Corps upon graduation from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas in May 2005. Upon completion of The Basic School, Second Lieutenant Gillett reported to The Basic Engineer Officer Course in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and was subsequently assigned to 7th Engineer Support Battalion (ESB) in Camp Pendleton, California. Second Lieutenant Gillett reported to his unit in May 2006 and was assigned as 1st Platoon Commander, Security Company, Combat Logistics Battalion-1 and deployed in support of Operation Iraq Freedom in August 2006.

Upon redeployment to CONUS, First Lieutenant Gillett served as a 1st Platoon Commander and Executive Officer for Company A, 7th Engineer Support Battalion. First Lieutenant Gillett was then assigned as the Operations and Intelligence Officer for Border Transition Team 5/6/2 and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in August 2008.

Captain Gillett then served as the Platoon Commander for the battalion security element and subsequently deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in November 2009. He was then assigned as the Executive Officer to Combat Logistics Company 111 (Rein) where he oversaw planning and execution of mobility operations in support of 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines offensive operations in support Operation Moshtarak in Marjah, Afghanistan.

After returning from deployment in June 2010, Captain Gillett executed orders to Expeditionary Warfare School in August 2010 where he served as a student until May 2011. He then executed orders to Charleston, South Carolina where he assumed the duties of Marine Officer Instructor at The Citadel from June 2011 to July 2014. Additionally, Captain Gillett served as a Platoon Commander at Officer Candidates School during the 2012 and 2013 summer increments.
In July 2014 Captain Gillett executed orders and reported to 2d Combat Engineer Battalion where he was assigned as Company Commander for and Mobility Assault Company and Engineer Support Company while serving in the battalion RBE. Upon the battalions return he was assigned as Mobility Assault Company Commander until June 2015 when he was assigned as the Battalion Operations Officer. In August 2015 he was promoted to Major and continued to serve as the Operations Officer until September 2016 when he was assigned as 2d CEB Executive Officer.

In April 2017 he executed orders to Recruiting Station, Ft. Lauderdale where he is slated to assume command in June 2017.
Major Gillett’s civilian education includes Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Texas A&M University (2005) and a Master of Science in Project Management from The Citadel (2013). Major Gillett’s military education includes Expeditionary Warfare School (2011), the Tactical MAGTF Integration Course (2011), and non-resident Command and Staff College (2014). Major Gillett also currently serves as an 8662 MAGTF Operations Ashore instructor for the EWS Distance Education Program, Camp Lejeune.

Major Gillett’s personal awards include the Purple Heart, Navy Commendation Medal w/ two gold stars, Navy Achievement Medal w/ V, and Combat Action Ribbon w/ gold star. Major Gillett is married to the former Heather Ortakales and has a son, Jaxton. He enjoys reading, CrossFit, kayaking, running, and surfing.
