Sgt. Maj. William Banks III Sergeant Major, 6th Marine Corps District

Sergeant Major Banks enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1991 and completed recruit training at MCRD Parris Island, SC. Following recruit training, Private First Class Banks attended Marine Combat Training at Camp Geiger and the Marine Corps Combat Service Support Schools at Camp Johnson. PFC Banks reported to 2d Battalion 10th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, NC in May of 1992. With in a few weeks he was given the billet of line NCO.

Lance Corporal Banks served with 3rd Battalion 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, NC, where he was a part of BLT 3/2 and participated in Operation Provide Promise in the former Republic of Yugoslavia. Corporal Banks was than assigned to 1st Battalion 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, NC. During his tenure he participated in Operation Restore Hope in Mogadishu, Somalia as part of Battalion Landing Team 1/6. Sergeant Banks was then transferred to 10th Marine Regiment. Once back in 10th Marines he was placed as the NCOIC/chief instructor of the Regimental Incidental Motor Vehicle Operators Course. Sergeant Banks than made a PCS move to Camp Pendleton, Ca. in February of 1996. While at the Garrison Base Motor Pool he ran the Bus, Tractor Trailer, Dispatch and Permits sections during his tour.

He attended Recruiters School in MCRD San Diego and in May 1999 he was sent to RS New York, RSS Brooklyn as a canvassing Recruiter, ANCOIC, & SNCOIC. In November 1999 at RS New York he was than promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant.

In June 2002, Staff Sergeant Banks was transferred to Camp Lejeune, after a very successful tour on recruiting duty, and was assigned to 2d FSSG. In the fall of 2002 he attended and graduated the Staff Noncommissioned Officers Academy’s Career Course. He was subsequently deployed to Iraq twice under I MEF. He took part in OIF and OIF II as a Convoy Commander/ Quick Reaction Force augment. In November 2004 Staff Sergeant Banks made a PCA move to Camp Johnson, MCCSSS, LOS. While there, he served, as a Class/PLT Commander, a Company First Sergeant, and as an Instructor. Once he was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant, he assumed the billet of the Company Gunnery Sergeant of Motor Transport Maintenance Instructional Company. During the spring of 2006 Gunnery Sergeant Banks attended and graduated the Staff Noncommissioned Officers Academy’s Advanced Course, Class 4-06.

In June 2007, Gunnery Sergeant Banks reported for duty with III MEF on Okinawa, Japan and assumed duties as the Marine Air-Ground Task Force Movement Control Center Operations Chief, MDDOC, III MEF.

In January 2009 First Sergeant Banks reported to Communications Company, Combat Logistics Regiment 37 for duty as the Company First Sergeant. After Serving Communications Company through two Field grade Officers as the Company Commander. In 2010, he was selected to deploy with Combat Logistics Battalion 3. During the FGP/ Pre-deployment forming process he served as the Senior Enlisted Adviser for the 476 Okinawa-based Marines who augmented Combat Logistics Battalion 3. While deployed in Afghanistan he served as the Embedded Training / Partnering Team First Sergeant/ Afghan National Army, Kandak 5/1/215 Senior Enlisted Mentor.

In May 2011 First Sergeant Banks assumed duties as Company First Sergeant, Weapons Company, 2d Battalion, 3d Marines. In June 2011, he served in the capacity of Battalion Sergeant Major during a period of transition between Sergeants Major. In October 2011, he attended and graduated the Senior Enlisted Professional Military Education course in Quantico, VA. During the Pre-Deployment training cycle he participated in Exercises Lava Viper and Enhanced Mojave Viper. In June 2012, First Sergeant Banks deployed to the Pacific in support of the Unit Deployment Program with Weapons Company where he participated in field exercises at the Jungle Warfare Training Center, Operation Fuji 12-5 and the Korean Military Exchange Program 13-1. In January 2013 he reported for duty with MCB Hawaii, HQ & Service BN. In May 2014 he reported to 2d Battalion, 11th Marines, 1st Mar Div.

In December 2014 Sergeant Major Banks reported for duty as the Squadron Sergeant Major for Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 466. In February 2017, he reported for duty as the Sergeant Major for Recruiting Station Baltimore.

In May 2019, he assumed his present duties as the Sergeant Major for 6th Marine Corps Recruiting District.

Sergeant Major Banks’ personal awards include: Meritorious Service Medal with 2 gold star in lieu of 3nd Award, Navy Marine Corps Commendation medal with 1 gold star in lieu of 2nd Award, Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal with 3 gold stars in lieu of 4th Award, the Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal with 1 Silver Star and 3 Bronze Stars in lieu of 9th Award, and Marine Corps Recruiting Ribbon. He is also authorized to wear the Navy and Marine Corps Parachutist Insignia.
