Sgt Maj Roberto L. Ortiz Sergeant Major, RS Baton Rouge

Roberto L. Ortiz was born in Coamo, Puerto Rico. His family relocated to the United States in 1984 and was raised in Jersey City, New Jersey. He enlisted into the Marine Corps and completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina in October 1997. Private Ortiz reported to Marine Combat Training at Camp Geiger, North Carolina. Private Ortiz then attended primary school for Food Service Specialist in Fort Lee, Virginia.

Upon completion of training, Private First Class Ortiz reported to 1st Battalion 2nd Marines, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

In February 1999, Lance Corporal Ortiz reported to 1st Battalion 6th Marines, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and was deployed in support of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

On 17 May 2000, Corporal Ortiz re-enlisted as a Field Radio Operator. Corporal Ortiz reported to 8th Engineer Support Battalion. In February 2003, Cpl Ortiz participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Upon his return Sergeant Ortiz executed orders to 4th Marine Regiment in Okinawa, Japan.
 

In October 2004, Sgt Ortiz reported to Head Quarters Company in Officer Candidate School as a Radio Chief. In June 2006, SSgt Ortiz reported to 1stBn, 7thMar in Twenty-nine Palms, California. During his time in 1stBn, 7thMar, SSgt Ortiz participated in Operation Enduring Freedom.


SSgt Ortiz executed Temporary Additional Duty to All Transition Group Battalion out of Camp Pendleton California. SSgt Ortiz joined Military Transition Team 0733 and in January 2009 the team deployed to Iraq in support of OEF. SSgt Ortiz was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant in December 2009.

Gunnery Sergeant Ortiz executed orders to Marine Corps Security Force Company, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba as the Radio Chief.

Gunnery Sergeant Ortiz graduated Marine Corps Combat Instructor School in February 2012. Gunnery Sergeant Ortiz then reported to Fox Company, Marine Combat Training Battalion where he held the Company GySgt billet.

In February 2013, First Sergeant Ortiz was assigned to Truck Company, Headquarters Battalion.

In September 2013, First Sergeant Ortiz was assigned as Alpha Company First Sergeant, 1st Battalion 6th Marine Regiment. In February 2014 1stSgt Ortiz deployed with the 22D Marine Expeditionary Unit.

In December 2014 he assumed duties as the Inspector-Instructor First Sergeant, for Company E, 2D Battalion, 25th Marines, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

In April 2018, Sergeant Major Ortiz reported to Recruiting Station Baton Rouge, LA, where he currently serves as the RS Sergeant Major.

Sergeant Major Ortiz is married to Marissa P. Ortiz of Clifton, NJ and has two daughters, Giana, 10 years old and Jasmin, 8 years old.

 

SgtMaj Ortiz’s awards include the Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 3 Gold Stars and the Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal with 2 Gold Stars.
