Sergeant Major Root enlisted in the Marine Corps in October of 1992 and completed recruit training at MCRD Parris Island on January 15, 1993. Following recruit training; He attended Marine Combat Training and Machine Gun School at SOI East, Camp Geiger, North Carolina. Upon Completion, he was assigned the MOS 0331, Machine Gunner.
Following the School of Infantry, Sergeant Major Root reported to Marine Barracks, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in May of 1993 for duty as a Marine Watch-Stander. During his tour, he was promoted to the rank of Private First Class and Lance Corporal. Furthermore, Sergeant Major Root completed two successful nuclear defueling missions in the Naval Ship Yard.
Sergeant Major Root was then transferred to Third Battalion Third Marines, Weapons Company in June of 1994 and was assigned as a Heavy Machine Gunner. In August of that same year, he was promoted to the rank of Corporal. While assigned with Third Battalion Third Marines, Sergeant Major Root completed a six month deployment to Okinawa, Japan and a one month deployment to Fairbanks, Alaska where he participated in cold weather training.
Sergeant Major Root was then transferred to the Active Reserve Program in October of 1996. He accepted career designation in the program and was assigned to the Inspector/Instructor Staff, Newport News, VA. While in VA, he was assigned as the Battalion’s Motor Transport Maintenance Chief. He was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Sergeant in March of 1997.
Sergeant Major Root made a lateral move and received orders to the School of Infantry (West) in Camp Pendleton, CA as a Light Armored Vehicle Crewman. Upon completion of school, He received orders to 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance (2d LAR) Battalion. He participated in four combined armed exercises (CAX) and one six month deployment with Battalion Landing Team (BLT) 1/8, 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). In July, 2001 Sergeant Major Root was selected to be trained as a Light Armored Vehicle (LAV) Master Gunner at Ft. Benning, GA. Upon graduating Master Gunner School, he was assigned to Bravo Company as the Company Master Gunner. In August 2002 he was deployed to Spain to participate in Operation Dynamic Mix and was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was next assigned as the Battalion Master Gunner and Command Vehicle Platoon Sergeant, Headquarters and Services Company.
In February of 2003, Sergeant Major Root was deployed to Kuwait in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He participated in the initial invasion of Iraq and was attached to Task Force Tripoli for the attack on Saddam Hussein’s home town of Tikrit.
Sergeant Major Root was then transferred to Marine Security Guard Battalion, Class 3-04 in March 2004. Upon completing School, he received orders to the United States Interests Section, Havana, Cuba as the Detachment Commander. After a successful tour in Cuba, he received orders to the American Embassy, Buenos Aires, Argentina. While on MSG duty, Sergeant Major Root was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.
In May of 2007, Sergeant Major Root was transferred back to 2d LAR Battalion, Delta Co. During that time he deployed to Iraq as a part of Operation Defeat Al-Qaeda in the North and “Task Force Mechanized”. He held the billet of Company Operations Chief. Upon returning from Iraq, Sergeant Major Root stood up the 24th MEU platoon and deployed with BLT 1/9, 24 MEU. His deployment took him to Haiti, “Operation Unified Response”, the South Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the Persian Gulf.
After being selected to First Sergeant, he received orders to 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistic Group, Camp Pendleton, CA and was assigned to Alpha Company. He then deployed to Afghanistan with Combat Logistics Battalion 1 (Engineer Company) in support of OEF 11.2/3.
In August of 2013, Sergeant Major was transferred to 1st Intelligence Battalion, Production and Analysis Company. In addition to the Company First Sergeant billet, he served as the Intelligence Reach-Back Element, Senior Enlisted Advisor for OEF 14.1 and 14.2.
July of 2014 brought Sergeant Major Root to Blount Island Command, Jacksonville, Florida where he served as the Command Senior Enlisted Advisor. Upon getting selected to Sergeant Major he received orders to Recruiting Station Montgomery, Alabama.
Sergeant Major Root’s personal awards include (5) Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal, (4) Navy/Marine Corps Achievement medal W/combat “V”, (1) Army Achievement Medal, (1) Combat Action Ribbon, (8) Good Conduct Medal
