Major Gill was born on 29 May 1984 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute with a Bachelor’s of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering and received his commission through the NROTC Program on 15 May 2006.
After completing The Basic School in December 2006, Major Gill attended the Field Artillery Basic Officer Leaders Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Upon graduating from Fort Sill in May 2007, he reported to Battery F, 2nd Battalion, 11th Marines as a Forward Observer. Three months later, Major Gill was transferred to Battery I, 3rd Battalion, 12th Marines during the unit’s reconstitution from the 2nd Marine Division to the 1st Marine Division. From August 2007 to November 2008, Major Gill served as Guns Platoon Commander and Fire Direction Officer. During this period, Major Gill deployed with Battalion Landing Team 2/5 in support of WESTPAC 02-08. Upon return from WESTPAC 02-08, he was assigned to Battery C, 1st Battalion, 11th Marines. From November 2008 to May 2009, Major Gill served as battery Liaison and Executive Officer. In May, Major Gill was selected to serve as Assistant Operations Officer and Battalion Fire Direction Officer where he spent the next six months until being transferred back to Battery C as Executive Officer. Upon his return, Battery C CHOP’d to Battalion Landing Team 1/4 and deployed in support of WESTPAC 02-10 from May to December 2010.
Upon return from WESTPAC 02-10, he executed orders to Camp LeJeune, North Carolina. From January 2011 to May 2012, Major Gill served as an Exercise Planner, AC/S G-3, II Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF). In June 2012, he checked into the MEF Headquarters Group’s Advisor Training Cell and began a six month work-up for a subsequent advisor tour. From December 2012 to June 2013, Major Gill deployed in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM 12.1 and 12.2 as the Executive Officer/Operations Advisor for an Afghan National Civil Order Police kandak. In August 2013, Major Gill returned to the AC/S G-3, II MEF and assumed the role of IO Plans Officer and Deputy Special Technical Operations Chief. In February 2014, he was transferred to the Future Operations section where he served the remainder of his time as a Planner. Major Gill was responsible for II MEF’s CENTCOM and PACOM Global Force Management portfolios.
From July 2014 to May 2015, Major Gill attended the Expeditionary Warfare School prior to executing orders to 1st Battalion, 10th Marines (1/10). He spent four months as the Assistant Operations Officer and assumed command of Battery B in September 2015. From February to August 2016, Major Gill deployed with his battery as part of the Forward Deployed Forces (East) 16.1 rotation to Okinawa, Japan. In October 2016, he relinquished command of Battery B and served as the Regiment’s interim Assistant Operations Officer prior to assuming command of HQ Battery Regiment. Major Gill relinquished command in June 2017 and was transferred back to 1/10 in anticipation of a combat deployment. From June 2017 to May 2018, he served as the battalion’s Operations Officer and deployed to Syria as part of Task Force 9.7 in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE. Upon redeployment, Maj Gill executed orders to RS Jacksonville and will assume command in June 2018.
His awards include the Bronze Star Medal with combat distinguishing device, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon. He is married to the former Dana Novick and they have three children, Joseph, Rylee, and Declan.
